Dear Editor,
All this talk, time and money for local government elections is really a waste of time.
Yes, I believe in democracy and people power, but the upcoming elections are nothing about these.
First, it seems 90 per cent of the nation doesn’t even care. No, I’ve done no polls, but last week we were interested in the US presidential elections and this week we are in thanksgiving and Black Friday preparation mode.
Why really bother? Just to say we have had elections? That’ll do us no good on any stage.
The people offering themselves up for the posts do not even seem to understand the power with which they are vested. They just want the jobs.
Look at the big interval since we last had these polls. The People’s National Party has, without intervention, held all parish councils, and consequently all mayorships, including for the Portmore Municipality. We can list the successes: poor spending habits; giving contracts to friends, family members and other connected people; scandals of missing money; poor garbage collection; street lights that don’t light up; not even the once-usual bushing of country roads.
It’s all a waste; maybe even a scam!
By the way, how much money are councillors paid? Anyone who knows the salary scale, please make it public.
