Jamaica – used and abused

Dear Editor,

If Jamaica were a woman, she would be hotly pursued, passionately desired, and profoundly loved by the opposite sex. Naturally, she would not be attracted to all of her admirers, for reasons of her

own choosing and personal liking. For example, she would have dated only two men (PNP and JLP) for the past 50 years. Despite the fact that both have fed her a sick diet of neglect, disrespect, and rejection, her commitment to them remains as solid as a rock.

There are many other men who loved and still love Jamaica, but she has never given them a look, much more a chance to take her out to dinner. Over time many men have tried to have an affair with her, including the New Nation Coalition, Ethiopian World Federation Incorporated Party, National Democratic Movement, Jamaican Alliance Movement, and even the brainchild of Marcus Garvey, the People's Political Party.

Unlike some of the other men whose desire for Jamaica soon fizzled in the dry dust of rejection, the NDM has relentlessly pursued her since 1995. Despite his many entreaties, however, Jamaica has ignored him, and on occasions derided him. She claims that he is too old-fashioned despite claiming to be new and different. She contends that the JLP and PNP know how to satisfy her penchant for instant gratification, but the NDM's offers, although very good, do not meet her needs. JLP and PNP have abused and rejected her, she said, but it is not their fault. She acknowledged that both of her suitors are responsible for the death of many of her children and for thousands of those trapped in the terrifying darkness of poverty, but it’s all right as things could have been worse.

Jamaica criticises NDM for his plans to reform her life so she can be protected from the abuses from her two life-long suitors. NDM said that after 50 years of broken promises, corruption, nontransparency, neglect, bungling, gamesmanship, “clansmanship,” and “donmanship,” it's about time for Jamaica to start giving herself a real chance in restoring her path to honour. He thinks Jamaica should give him a chance because after 50 years of being beaten, cheated on, raped, pillaged and plundered, it is about time for her to be treated like the queen she is.

Jamaica laments that after 50 years it is too difficult to try a new suitor, and PNP and JLP are good lovers with good intentions, but times are hard. She smiles as she reminisces about the sweet, juicy words JLP and PNP say to her every four or five years. She says those words sustain her for the years when both men hardly pay her any attention. Such terms like progressive agenda and jobs, jobs, jobs, have filled her heart with hope for the future, however elusive the reality of that hope has been so far. She is prepared to lose many more of her children in a spiralling crime rate; have more of her daughters raped; have her economic situation deteriorate and continue to borrow money to pay for the affluent lifestyle of her two wasteful suitors.
