Dear Editor,
I recently came across a video that has gone viral on Facebook and the internet, showing a UTech student being beaten by security guards amidst the shouts of onlookers to "kill the $#@* boy!". It seems from this video that this young man was being beaten because of his sexual orientation. I would have hoped that the University of Technology would have stood out as a bastion of education and an institution that fosters education, civility, and integrity.
Though I did not attend this institution of higher learning, I still hold it in high regard as one that can truly compete with universities worldwide. I am also very pleased to see that President Errol Morrison recently received an award from the Kiwanis Club celebrating excellence in nation building.
You can imagine my dismay upon viewing a video showing a university student being beaten by a campus security guard in a mob environment. It is my fundamental belief that a university campus should foster the education and discovery of ideas by students in a safe environment free of persecution and fear. It is with the faith in this belief in which I write.
I would like to know what actions the university and President Morrison will take to address this matter swiftly. It is with a sense of great concern that I bring this to your attention and ask that nothing short of criminal charges be brought against those involved and the contract of the services of the company be terminated forthwith. We cannot as a society continue to sit idly by while injustice permeates our society. I hope that the university does not remain silent, because if it does, then it is standing on the side of the offender.
