Dear Editor,
Our farmers have incurred great losses as a result of the hurricane that hit the island recently. Agriculture is very important in any nation, so every Jamaican should be concerned about the state of affairs in the agricultural sector.
Natural disasters occur sometimes, but people should put measures in place to cushion or lessen the effects of such unpleasant occurrences. In view of this, I recommend that our farmers acquire the knowledge of and skills in greenhouse technology to the extent they are able to practise hydroponics (growing crops in soilless medium). The medium could be movable.
The government should establish, large or mega-storage facilities in farming communities where farmers could store their greenhouse plants whenever hurricanes are imminent. This would save crops from destruction, and ultimately save the sector from collapsing.
In addition, the private sector could assist our farmers by providing them with funds for the rebuilding of the sector after the passage of hurricanes.
We should buy local agricultural produce so as to financially support our farmers instead of importing food.
Suffice it to say that our farmers need us now. We should not fail them in their time of great distress.
