Dear Editor,
No matter what we try to do as a country to get our energy bill under control, all our efforts seem to just go up in flames.
The journey has been increasingly unfortunate and frustrating, especially since the dubbed 'saviour' failed to meet the requirements in order to build the power plant.
I must commend the honourable prime minister for seeing the need to place a project of this magnitude under her direct control. Mrs Simpson Miller and her Cabinet must ensure that the Vin Lawrence-led enterprise team is given whatever resources they might need and that their activities are transparent.
But while the focus might be on this specific project, the Government needs to swiftly amend the JPS's licence so that the company is able to replace its own generating capacity. It is rather shameful that we have to be relying on aged, inefficient generators.
Nonetheless, it is quite impressive that there is increased attention being paid to renewables as our source of energy. The introduction of LED street lights, damming of several rivers and the expansion of the Wigton wind farm quickly come to mind.
But what has become of the waste-to-energy initiative?
The prime minister's travels have been met with much criticism, but I believe that she along with several of her ministers need to head back to Asia, specifically to Japan, China and South Korea. Imagine getting long-term loans at low interest rates, and grants to build hectares of solar farms and coal plants. These would be loans worth taking.
I hope the Government really considers this because the whole economy and future of Jamaica depend on it.
