Dear Editor,
Last Tuesday was another occasion that the member states of the United Nations voted to condemn the blockade against our sister nation, Cuba, imposed by the United States for 50 years.
In fact, it was the 21st consecutive occasion the UN General Assembly in New York debated the resolution entitled, "Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba." Most nations condemned the embargo — the vote was 188-3. The USA, Israel and the Pacific island Palau voted against, while the Micronesia and the Marshall Islands abstained.
Jamaica, to its eternal credit, has voted consistently with the majority of the peoples of the world and has even upped the ante over the past three years by having this important resolution debated in our parliament.
The question that I wish to ask the President of the United States Barack Obama is: What is taking him so long to turn his face against reaction and to support progressive humanity in lifting this anachronistic blockade which undermines the very foundation on which he was elected in 2008 and endorsed on November 6, 2012, which is "Change"?
Mr President, the recent endorsement of you by the majority of the US population indicates that the interest of the majority will ultimately trump minority interests, even in challenging times, and especially where your weapon is the truth.
Cuba is not your enemy.
Brother Barack, do the right thing. The eyes of the world are on you.
