Dear Editor,
The Jamaica Baptist Union recently developed a plan to assist Haiti. Individual members of different churches within the JBU made a commitment to plant one banana sucker, nurture it, harvest and sell it, then give the funds over to the JBU to help Haiti.
This remarkable idea could be used to spur further growth and development in Jamaica. We should each join together to rescue our country's economy and help those in need.
Should this plan come to fruition, it could have positive implications for the economy as it relates to taxes, budget, debt, education, health care, and welfare, etc. Just imagine, the boost to the economy if every income-earning Jamaican were to dedicate a part, piece, portion, unit, time, skill, talent, resources (apart from the usual taxes) to meet the needs of a particular sector of society.
If the government wants to focus on budget plans or debts, each individual could dedicate something to help with the budget or to pay off debt, or to help those in need, like those affected by flooding in St Mary and Portland.
Help could come in the following ways:
* A writer could dedicate a book to a particular cause along with future royalties.
* A student could opt to save one day out of the week for the same cause.
* A farmer could dedicate a cow, goat, pig, plant, crop(s).
* A nurse could dedicate one day or one week's worth of savings.
* A lawyer could dedicate a pay cheque per week or month, based on services carried out.
* A doctor could dedicate the funds from a day's or week's labour per month.
* A banker - a percentage of a week's earnings.
* A poet - a collection of works sold with future royalties.
* A musician, singer, DJ - an album sold with future royalties.
* An artist - a fraction of earnings from an exhibition or sale of work.
* A teacher - a week's funds from extra-lesson earnings.
* A dressmaker - a day's work each month.
* A pastor - one week's sale of his sermons on DVD or CD per month.
* The home-maker - one day's pay or a bake sale one day per month.
* A vendor - a part of a day's work or one day's work.
* The taxi-driver - the collection of coins for one week.
* The shopkeeper - the sales of sweets for one week per month.
* The pensioner - a garden of flowers.
All of this could perhaps be done for one year. To show my commitment to this - I will lead by example. I have written a book : JobWise - Turning Creativity Into Employment. I am offering the revenue of future sales made from this work to help flood victims in St Mary and Portland, to help those who are HIV/AIDS positive, those who are mentally challenged, and people who live on the streets. Funds will also be given to charities.
