Dear Editor,
As a gay man raised in a fundamentalist church I married my best female friend thinking that this would cure me. It did not. And I ended up hurting her terribly.
I want to prevent any other females enduring this sort of trauma. That is one reason I am campaigning so hard for recognition of the private right to intimacy of gay men. Allowing us to form our own relationships unmolested by the law will reduce the likelihood of gays feeling the need to use women as "cures" for our homosexuality or worse, as "beards" to mask our true sexual orientation.
To paraphrase Jamaica's Minister of Justice Senator Mark Golding: "Recognising the human rights of gays is [also] a women's rights issue."
