In defence of our justice system

Dear Editor,

If attorneys are to be attorneys they have to have their privileges under our constitution remain intact, regardless of Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).

If not, we may as well do away with the role of attorneys as the independence of the Jamaican Bar cannot be guaranteed.

One must also remember that this is a democracy, not a dictatorship, so we cannot allow the State and their foreign conspirators to erode the freedoms of the people.

The justice system in a democracy is the only independent barrier between a potentially tyrannical government and the people, in this case Jamaica. Its honour must be vigorously defended, even in the case concerning the poorest or richest alleged criminal.

In the words of the Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn, her office "will not be drawn into doing what is expedient if it believes the course of action it is being asked to take is wrong". That is the approach that must be maintained and defended for our justice system.
