Dear Editor,
I am very concerned about the headline 'KSAC worried about drop in revenue at metro pound'.
Now, who in their right mind would want their vehicle towed away and to be forced to hand over hard-earned cash to retrieve it each time they go into the city. Nowadays, a lot of us who go downtown to do business take great care to ensure that we park in designated areas. Some, myself included, don't bother to drive.
If that is the way the local government authorities or the Government of the country intends to earn its revenue, then it shows a lack of innovation to ensure that certain facilities are in place for proper public use, in this case a public parking facility. In other words, these leaders are creating a problem that they would benefit from, and are taking advantage of it.
In a time of austerity every dollar counts, and as a result people are more conscious of what they are about.
The coffers of the local government authority and the Government at large will always be challenged as dons and other types of extortionists find ways into gaps that the leaders of the country are not able to manage.
Seriously, loss of revenue is just a sign of very poor managerial ability, and I don't intend to knock any particular party, it is just a Jamaican weakness. When you look at parking, for example, a lot of these young men on the streets should have been trained and employed as traffic warders, who assist in parking, when there arises, and there is indiscipline, then prosecution takes place.
Mayor Brown Burke, you see the changes that are taking place in the world, they have left us still clutching to outdated methods. And, as a people, we need to learn that changes come with challenges, some of which we are not able or willing to accept.
So, Madam Mayor, you and your team need to put your heads together and find new ways to bring in revenue.
