Dear Editor,

I just rolled the boat ashore to let off some steam. I was resting in peace but St Peter gave me a 48-hour pass to row by because he saw that I was getting riled up and agitated. We don't want to get inflamed up here; it's not that kind of place, and Heaven Boss doesn't like it.

The National Housing Trust (NHT) symbolised the launch of a breakthrough in the social fabric, community development and housing solutions for Jamaicans. Through an Act of Parliament in 1975, an institution that pooled resources for low interest rate mortgages was born in 1976. It would be an incentive to private developers to house the nation. This was something to be proud of! Nowadays I am forced to asked: NHT, are you for us?

I see where the NHT promised all its customers the highest standards of service. Queries, loan requests, suggestions, and complaints would be handled with the utmost confidentiality, integrity and care. NHT staff further promised to treat everyone with respect. Your aim was to delight your contributors. So what happened?

I am concerned about allegations by claimants regarding their refunds. If there is fraud and impostors are making claims and receiving refunds, I hope you are being compassionate and would investigate possible loopholes to be plugged because people worked hard to be able to make their deductions.

The same kind of investigatin must go into the NHT's decision to purchase the failed Outameni attraction for $180 million and the plans to upgrade this failed facility at a cost exceeding $100 million. Is this a joke that you plan to operate the attraction as a going concern? Isn't this really a betrayal of the Trust's mandate? How does speculation in this piece of failed investment add to and improve the existing supply of housing? How does it promote housing projects? Why not make prescribed loans available to faithful contributors for housing? How does Outameni encourage and stimulate improved methods of production of houses? I know this is not the first time that you are doing something like this. We all know that NHT is cash-rich but please, keep your sticky fingers out and develop solutions for the contributors as it was planned to do.
