Dear Editor,
I read with keen interest the article written by Donald I Blair, titled 'The Story of Manchester' published in the Jamaica Observer Central of December 1, 2014.
I pause to query the statement made that the Jamaica Red and the Jamaica Black breeds of cattle were developed in Manchester.
Blair did not say who it was that developed these breeds of cattle. It would have done well for him to do so.
If, in fact, the late Dr T P Lecky had anything to do with it, then those breeds were developed at his Leyton Valley farm not far from where he had his lab in Portland.
I was an associate of the late doctor and also a close friend. I also have very close ties to Manchester, as my great-great-grandfather, James Knight, was martyred there. Today Skull Point in Mile Gully attests to that. Both my parents are Manchesterians. There is one great-grandson of the martyred slave still living in Mile Gully today, and he is about to close his innings of a good century.
I would love to talk with Mr Blair.
