Dear Editor,

I wish to join the local and international accolades to recognise and commend Alia Atkinson on her recent historic and outstanding achievement; that of becoming the first black woman to win a world swimming title when she won the 100-m breaststroke at the world short-course championships in Doha on Saturday, December 6, 2014.

Alia also equalled the world record of 1:02:36 sec. This is a remarkable achievement and once again places a Jamaican in the sporting halls of fame, a coveted place in history, and we salute her accomplishment.

She is not only a representation of an empowered and accomplished woman, but stands as a role model for our youth, the Afro-global population, and all aspiring competitive athletes, that nothing is off-limits with dedication and personal resolve in accomplishing your dreams.

Alia Atkinson has pursued her career with tenacity and has made great strides. Sports media throughout the world and the international community at large are celebrating her accomplishment and, as Jamaicans, we are proud of her and salute her for representing Jamaica with the highest standards of sportsmanship and professionalism.
