Dear Editor,
Feeling a deep sense of sadness and lack of hope has become a daily experience when I consider the morals of our society. Social media and smartphones have become tools through which citizens, without a second thought, use to display violent and explicit content for all the world to see.
In case you are wondering, I'm referring to the frequency with which violence and sexual acts are portrayed in social media in Jamaica by its citizens.
Now, the sharing of such content is one thing, but what is more troubling is that we have become a people who no longer value life or have pride in ourselves. The society is losing its humanity.
Our young people, instead of practising wholesome and healthy living, now promote promiscuity and unhealthy pleasures, etc. Truly my heart cries out.
This situation has only brought to the fore the lack of leadership from all levels of responsibility. Parents, Government, private sector, and the church need to really realise that we are responsible for the youth of today. Although everyone makes their own choices, the influences around us play a major part in our development. Let us influence our youth for the bette,r and not the worse. Let us love and encourage them, all while passing on to them the morals that our parents thought us.
My friends, always remember it starts in the home and don't be afraid to get help from the 'Good Book'. So let us aim to maintain a wholesome society.
