Violence against women is a global pandemic. It is a problem that knows no geographic, socio-economic or cultural boundaries. It constitutes a breach of the fundamental right to life, liberty, security, dignity, equality.
With this said, I am deeply saddened by news of the recent violent attack against a female student at the University of the West Indies, Mona. This barbaric and inhumane act is cause for great concern of the level of safety for the women residing on these halls of residence and the ability of the security measures implemented to allow them to be comfortable living on campus.
In my opinion, the authorities' response to this incident has been belated and inadequate. I am hereby calling for a thorough and urgent investigation into this, other incidents, and all allegations of gender-based violence on campus.
Recent studies have highlighted the "culture of gender-based violence on the university campus". As a former student I can speak about the many incidents that have occurred that have not been addressed and have been swept under the rug. So I believe that truth lies within this study.
It has been said that mechanisms have been established to prevent cases of gender-based violence, but how have these been implemented? Women need to feel safe and protected, not live with feelings of insecurity because men have turned against them.
