Dear Editor,
If I had wanted to denigrate Digicel, I could not have done a better job than they did themselves in the incident involving Michael O'Hara in the "Be Extraordinary" incident on the final day of the recently concluded ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys' and Girls' Championships. The incident gave new meaning to the term "ambush marketing".
However, I will not be an advocate for GraceKennedy, LIME, or the other sponsors; they can make their own case.
However, no matter how I try to rationalise it, I come back to one conclusion: Digicel was not going to be left out of the most compelling sporting product in Jamaica -- even if they did not pay to have the right to do so. It smacks of desperation and questions the presence of a moral compass.
It somewhat compromised the young man at the centre of all this and says it is okay to be underhanded.
Where were his "handlers"? Where was the headmaster of Calabar in all of this? Did he know beforehand? Did he sanction it? The athlete is representing the school.
Once again 'fair play' has been brushed aside in the interest of commercial gain. What a shame!
