Dear Editor,
The attack on a group from the Jamaica Labour Party youth arm, Young Jamaica, by alleged People's National Party supporters is a retrograde step. Such action is indicative of threats to political pluralism. In this the 21st century, where as a small island nation we have achieved so much in educational development -- though still lacking in many areas -- the least thing we are expecting from our political opponent is a violent attack.
The members of Young Jamaica have a right to request a meeting with the prime minister on any matter affecting us as a country and should not be subjected to brutal and vicious attacks. At this juncture in our political life, we must not see political differences through red and green coloured lenses, but rather through those of economics, educational, and human development, then work together to resolve them in a beneficial way.
Over the last 20 years we have seen a steady decline in political violence, but unfortunately we have now taken a turn with last Tuesday's attack. This type of beast-like behaviour is one that must be addressed at the highest level of government.
We, the members of St James Central Youth Movement, stand ready and willing to support the team of Young Jamaica in the fight for justice, as we cannot stand by and watch Rome (Jamaica) burn while searching for the first cheap seat on an aeroplane to the closest destination that will accept us.
