Dear Editor,
The current problem with some of the imported bulk sugar (used as raw material) being sold to the retail trade, thereby bypassing the full Customs duties applicable, can quite easily be solved by importing branded packaged refined sugar to be sold in the retail trade only.
The practice of repackaging it in plain plastic bags should no longer be allowed on the retail shelves for this product.
Brown sugar is being sold locally under the brand Jamaica Gold, and since Jamaica currently does not produce granulated/refined white sugar, branded products are available from companies overseas.
Customs can now quite easily trace the imports of these branded refined sugar to ensure that full duties are paid.
Problem solved!
