Dear Editor,
It would be remiss of me if I did not respond to a letter written by Ava Martin, purportedly of Malvern, St Elizabeth, published in the Observer May 25, 2015.
Martin suggests that she may have to move her vote to St Elizabeth North Eastern from St Elizabeth South Eastern because of poor representation from her member of parliament (MP).
Firstly, a check of the current voters' list does not indicate anyone with the name Ava Martin listed as a voter in St Elizabeth SE, and the name does not appear on the current list of voters transferred to other constituencies.
Secondly, if Martin was an observant resident she would have noticed that:
1. St Elizabeth SE, under the leadership of Richard Parchment, is one of the most politically stable constituencies held by the PNP. No 'cass cass', no demonstrations, no challenges.
2. Because of the MP's performance, Labourites are changing their political allegiance and joining team PNP as evidenced recently in the case of JLP Councillor Gregory Myers.
3. In the Malven area alone, the following have been accomplished in just over three years
a) completion and opening of the Malvern Police Station
b) rehabilitation of the Malvern Health Centre
c) construction and opening of a new classroom block at The Hampton School, which has eased classroom overcrowding and added capacity
d) conversion of the proposed juvenile centre at Postdam into a new sixth form block for Munro College
e) construction of flush toilet system at St Mary's Primary School and infrastructural upgrade at Bethlehem Primary and Infant School
f) start of construction of the 36.3MW wind farm, an investment of over $10 billion
g) electricity extensions to the districts of Roseberry and Dalton
h) establishment of a computer centre and Wi-Fi access point at Epping Forrest Community Centre
i) upgrade of roads: Malvern to Leeds, Ginger Ground, Elgin, Roseberry, Retirement
Martin raised three specific points as reasons for her wanting to change her vote; the new Roger Clarke High School, the Santa Cruz Health Centre and the fire unit in Santa Cruz. Allow me to point:
1. A new classroom block is being constructed at the BB Coke High School. Come September 2015 the school will operate on a single shift and start a sixth form for the first time.
2. There has been a total upgrade of the Junction Health Centre and the long-awaited maternity wing will become operational this year.
3. A used fire engine was obtained at the Junction Fire Station in 2014 and funds have now been identified for its total overhaul.
MP Parchment, keep up the good work, we the voters in St Elizabeth SE are keenly observing your advocacy and we will judge you fairly.
