OUR has me on hold

Dear Editor,

I write to express my disappointment with the slow pace of an investigation that I referred to the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) over three months ago.

I wrote to the OUR on March 25, 2015 and they acknowledged receipt of my e-mail within days.

The supplier of a utility, based on information supplied by the OUR, was in flagrant breach of several provisions of the Act governing their operations. I brought this to the attention of the OUR and was given an assurance that the matter would be investigated but, to date, the results of such an investigation has not been forthcoming.

I have made several enquiries as to the status of any such investigation and the last thing I was told is that the matter is still being looked into.

I really do not understand. If a company is in flagrant breach of the law, why is the OUR so slow in taking action? A public transport operator, for example, who breaches his road licence is immediately prosecuted. Why are some individuals/entities allowed to flout the law with seeming impunity?

I am profoundly concerned and I am therefore using this medium to request that a resolution to this untenable situation be arrived at as a matter of extreme urgency.
