Dear Editor,
In response to a letter to the editor published in the Daily Observer on July 30, 2015, titled 'Proud people don't beg', I would like to express my disdain in hearing someone speak so lowly of their country. Jamaica is celebrating 53 years of Independence; that alone is something to be proud of.
Interestingly, when Jamaicans migrate to foreign countries they are the ones we see celebrating that country's Independence on social media. But when it comes to their own country, they find all sorts of critiques about there being nothing to be proud of.
With that said, I encourage the author of that letter, and any other Jamaican who feels the same, to free themselves from mental slavery and take a good look at our country. It is only then that those who are oblivious to the many achievements of this wonderful country will find a reason to be proud. For me, there are so many things I can outline that make me proud of my home, Jamaica.
I will be participating in the activities happening across the island in recognition of Emancipation and Independence, and I will surely be celebrating a Jamaica that is proud and free. Our music, our sport, people, culture, and rich heritage are just a few of the things that make me happy to be joining this year's celebration.
So, my fellow Jamaicans, let us not listen to the naysayers, let us embrace the theme, 'Proud and Free...Jamaica 53'.
