Dear Editor,
Each time I see a street person I see a human being. Some are on the street as a result of their past decisions, whereas others had no choice in their circumstance. These people have needs.
Whereas the average citizen does not have the means, most of the time, to help street people, this does not prevent us from advocating for their care. Legislation needs to be drafted to provide for them, and work needs to be done on their behalf.
In principle, I do not give money to street people, but if someone is hungry I will feed them if I can. These people are our neighbours who have fallen on hard times. If we can create a culture of caring, it can go a far way in reducing crime and violence within our communities.
