Dear Editor,
Please tell me that the authors of threats against our Sunshine Girls, reported in the Observer of Wednesday, August 19, had the decency to also publish "their" names and photographs in the press or social media, as is the case with our national netball team members.
For a team from Jamaica to place fourth in the sport's World Cup, with a population of approximately 2.8 million people, and is defeated by countries such as New Zealand with a population of 4.5 million; Australia with a population of 23 million; and England with a population of 53 million, we clearly have not appreciated the magnitude of our achievements.
Furthermore, I am further saddened by the fact that the identities of those who threaten seem to be known, which suggests that their motive is one of "sour grapes".
I do not profess to be an authority on the rudiments of the game, and so I would timorously offer the recommendation in what I observed to be a strength of our opponents, in particular New Zealand and Australia, in that they did not confine themselves to getting below the ring to shoot, but would shoot from outside that area (somewhat like a three-pointer in basketball), thereby conserving vital energy.
Finally, every effort should be made from now to insist that the 2019 competition be held in the Caribbean. Let them be the ones to travel halfway around the world to compete under our conditions.
