Support for a breach: We're in a sad place

Dear Editor,

How obscured can our ethics be? Recently a policeman visited the scene of an entertainment event to curtail a breach of the Noise Abatement Act, but, instead, facilitated the continuation of the breach by taking the microphone and participating in the event. But it didn't stop there, however; for the policeman, in displaying his disregard for the edicts of good governance, proceeded to deejay about his disregard for the Independent Commission of Investigations.

Sadly, the reality of this unfortunate occurrence got worse, as the politically veiled, paradoxically named Citizen Action for Principle and Integrity (CAPI) has undertaken a public appeal for leniency, in support of the misguided and thoughtless conduct of the policeman. Still, the circus of immorality was to receive a further qualified endorsement, with the reported comment of a pastor, saying he would have supported the policeman had he been deejaying something positive. And herein lies a significant problem in our country: Too many people are not possessed with the critical thinking ability to discern the tipping point between right and wrong.

That there continues to be widespread howls of support for the improper conduct of this policeman, who failed to execute the law by ensuring the event was closed, consistent with the permit issued by the constituted authority, we have again displayed why disorder and narrow-mindedness continue to fetter our development. And further, that significant support for this behaviour has come from erudite quarters confirms the degrading of the effectiveness of education, where parochial socialisation predominates.

We are in a sad place. The constable, like so many other members of the police force, needs to be discharged from the organisation for dereliction of duties and for bringing the organisation into disrepute. Granted, with the force already mired, Constable Lindon Black did not deviate too far from home.
