Dear Editor,
I have been reliably informed that president of the United States of America, Barack Obama, has responded to and acknowledged, whether directly or indirectly, receipt of every letter that is addressed to him. The population of the US is approximately six hundred million.
Jamaica population is approximately five per cent of the US's yet members of Parliament and ministers of Government are failing to respond to letters written to them by concerned citizens on various matters affecting their daily lives.
I have written to Robert Pickersgill, minister of water, land, environment and climate change; Peter Bunting, minister of national security; and Anthony Hylton, minister of industry, investment and commerce, without the benefit of a reply on matters pertaining to my business. I have written to the MP for Kingston Western, the constituency in which I operate my business, and I have not even received an acknowledgement of my letter or a phone call. However, I was invited to a meeting by a third party with MP. I did not show.
I would like to remind ministers of Government and members of Parliament that they are servants of the people and paid by the taxpayers.
Crime and violence is out of hand, and one of the main reasons is that government officials do not acknowledge or respond to letters sent to them. The two dailies can publish so many letters and no more. I would like to commend the Office of the Prime Minister for once acknowledging receipt of my letter, although I am yet to get a response to the matter.
Probably my questions are too sensitive so they are placed on the back burner.
The upcoming election will see a very low voter turnout, in my opinion, as the electorate is disillusioned with the way in which politics is practised in Jamaica. A lot of Jamaicans have been turned off. We need to change this.
