Dear Editor,
I write on the matter surrounding the head girl at St Hilda's High School. Why was the public defender brought into this matter? Is this an instance of the intrusive overreaching of the State, even if St Hilda's is a government-aided Anglican school?
On principle, I think it is wise to restrict the power of the State to interfere as far as possible. This will allow individuals and institutions to live out their world views with minimal intervention. In this framework, the intervention of the State would be justified if and only if it can be demonstrated that the conduct of a group poses a substantial threat to the common good. I do not think that this case meets that criterion. We must be wary of the overreach of an intrusive State. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
