What can the JLP offer Jamaica?

Dear Editor,

I find it utterly amazing that with an election somewhere around the corner the only thing the Opposition has offered to the people of Jamaica, so far, is criticism after criticism, slander after slander about what the People's National Party (PNP) has done, not done, or will do.

I have yet to hear if the road from poverty to prosperity will be paved with gold, silver or regular cement.

In light of all those premature babies dying, I have yet to hear what plans the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has to prevent further deaths of premature babies should they win the election.

Apart from telling Jamaicans that if they want to wake up out of their beds alive that they cannot vote PNP, I have yet to hear how, in a country where over 1,000 people have died since the start of the year, should the JLP win, they plan to combat the monster called crime.

I find it utterly amazing that such vim and vigour is shown at the political rallies in speaking about what the PNP has done wrong, but yet the vim and vigour is not equal in saying what the JLP will do differently.

So then, should Jamaicans simply vote for the JLP based on what the PNP has done or not done? I mean, come on, even Donald Trump has a plan -- as stupid as it may seem.

Am I to take it that Jamaicans should go to the polls and vote for the JLP simply because Andrew is young?

Jamaicans are all aware of what the PNP has done or has not done, so common sense would dictate that the JLP needs to come with solutions, and not the same old noise and foolishness over and over again.

A song saying "Bye Bye Portia" does not an election win. Cussing Michael Manley and talking about what P J Patterson might have or not have in France does not an election win. Walking from district to district and kissing old ladies and babies does not an election win. Supporters posting pictures of Holness's Clarks shoes does not an election win; photo ops smiling at the camera and then posting it on your page, Holness, will not an election win.

What you do not get is that the PNP can do all that if they choose because they are already in power. And if the voices saying PNP country is not enough, then the JLP needs to figure out why for 50-odd years of Independence the PNP has managed to be in power so many times. Clearly the JLP needs to figure out what it is about the PNP that keeps Jamaicans coming back for more.

The people do not see the JLP as an alternative, and now with Holness at the helm the times look even darker, as after all, he is no Edward Seaga or Bruce Golding. And, from my point of view, in the short time he has been the leader of the JLP he has done more harm than good to the party that was once seen as an alternative.
