Dear Editor,
I refer to the letter to the editor by Stephen Harrison and wish to point our that it is inaccurate to say that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and People's National Party (PNP) have been consumed with winning elections since 1962.
Getting elected is the process which gives parties the power and authority to act on behalf of the rest of us in matters which we cannot act individually, so the process of election is necessary.
What we should do is to examine the performance record of both parties during their periods in office since 1962 to now, and determine which of them has contributed the most to our poor state of affairs.
The period 1962 -1972 under the JLP Administration the country made such rapid strides in its development that leaders of other independent countries visited us to inquire what we were doing right. Our progress was admired all over the world, Jamaica was referred to as the "Queen of the Caribbean".
After 1972, when the PNP assumed office, all that changed. They have spent 30 of the 43 years since 1972 in power and all that they can speak about is obedience to the International Monetary Fund. All around us is rot and decay, our currency devalued to $120 to US$1. The PNP are responsible for this bad situation. The facts are there.
