Criminalisation of the Jamaican people

Dear Editor,

This Government, having caused the devaluation of the Jamaican dollar with its ineptitude in all matters relating to governance, has embarked on a programme to criminalise its citizens by restricting cash transactions to a maximum of one million Jamaican dollars.

Today, the Jamaican dollar is worth less than US$0.01. So one million Jamaican dollars is the equivalent of US$8,333.33.

Under this new law, a pastor and car salesman have been charged and are to pay fines of $300,000 (US$2,500) or serve time in jail. However, the real crime is the desire of getting a car to improve the miserable existence for the ordinary man in Jamaica. So now the church will be led by a convicted criminal. Amazing!

Meanwhile, a politician during her tenure as mayor of the municipality of Lucea spent her time overseeing the distribution of contracts valued near four million dollars to family and friends and there are doubts to laying charges. In any event, her fine by law would be about $1,000 (US$8.33).

The lack of fairness in the legislation causing the criminalisation of the pastor and car salesman and the lack of penalty for how public funds are used is unacceptable.

What we are experiencing now in Jamaica must be what slavery was like; to have no voice in how our country is run, and have no protection from evil against us, and being forced to work for nothing except some political handouts.

We have no viable, peaceful way to remove the stranglehold caused by their incompetence. It seems that the political class are the enemy of the people. It seems we will be spending more time in the wilderness, since we have no intention of returning to "Egypt".

Election or not, I insist on ethical, capable and disciplined leadership to take us out of bondage. We the people must unite to get this done, or we will be in the wilderness forever, or at least for my lifetime.
