I am not sure how many people have had the frightening realisation that I have had in regard to the Dwayne Vaz imbroglio.
Vaz is a young man (age 33, I think) who has only recently been elected to Parliament, and one of the new breed who we hope would have started to chart a new path in political discourse.
It appears, though, that he has already adapted the politically divisive habits of his seniors. What a shame! What a lost opportunity!
His feeble explanation in his apology on at least one radio interview makes me want to hurl. Are the rest of us all idiots so that he believes his sophistry and glibness can make us believe the opposite of the sentiments he expressed? Tom drunk, but Tom nuh fool!
The reaction from the PNP hierarchy, though predictable, is very, very disappointing. Is there any wonder there is talk of the general secretary being weak?
Sadly, it appears that we are doomed to continue down this path for a long time, because it was not so long ago that another young PNP politician, who really impressed me and grabbed the attention of many when he burst onto the political scene, referred to the other party’s supporters as “ dutty Labourites”.
I know that there is the irresistible temptation to indulge in inflammatory rhetoric when Jamaican politicians take to the political platform, but if Vaz was just looking to hype up the vibes, he could have done better with little effort than channelling the Vybz whose lyrics, it seems, is a true reflection of his character.
