Holness may well be what Jamaica needs

Dear Editor,

I was browsing through the social media page of Opposition Leader Andrew Holness, and I must admit that I was very surprised to note that on the birthdays of former Prime Minister Michael Manley and that of the current prime minister and People’s National Party President Portia Simpson Miller, he used his page to recognise and wish them happy birthdays.

I never anticipated that the Opposition leader, at the height of political campaigning, would take the time, put politics aside, and genuinely extend his regard on their special days — and I was greatly moved by this gesture.

What this shows is that Andrew is a true leader worthy of respect and admiration, and we can all learn a thing or two from him. Not so long ago it was his birthday, and as far as I observed, nobody from the Government extended well wishes; and if they did it was certainly not as publicly as Andrew had.

Many people may not see the significance of this expression, but to me, it stands out as a true demonstration of the measure of the man and his ability to rise above the petty things.

Andrew has, over the years, proved and disproved many ideas, theories and opinions about him. And on many of those occasions, naysayers and detractors, cheerleaders and supporters, and totally objective third parties with no personal interest in the matter, like myself, have been left with nothing but a positive impression of him.

Andrew Holness may very well be exactly what Jamaica needs.

I make no predictions as to what kind of prime minister he will be, but if the little and big things he’s done so far are any indications, we may just have in him a distinguished, first-rate, world-class servant of the people.
