The constituency of Trelawny Northern has come under the microscope within the past few months. This normally quiet constituency has come to life since the announcement of J P White as the standard-bearer for the People’s National Party (PNP) in the upcoming general election.
His sojourn into the constituency to campaign for the seat, some nine months ago, irked many people. They saw it as blatant disregard for Patrick Atkinson. The tensions have been high and have even boiled over into protests.
The PNP has also shown its disregard for the voice of the people and has commanded us to “rally around JP”, but I would love to ask the PNP and J P White, what is there to rally around?
Since the announcement of White as the standard-bearer for the party, Comrades have been forced to quench the flaming darts of rumours as they could ignite the whole party.
I hereby recommend to the PNP that White be removed from the party’s list of candidates. It is my view that Atkinson be returned as the party’s candidate, since White has failed to gain the kind of traction that should see him presiding over a constituency which has seen tremendous development over the past 10 years.
Is the PNP ready to relinquish its hold on a constituency that it has worked assiduously to develop? Is the party so stiff-necked that it is failing to listen to the cry of the Comrades in the constituency and is running the risk of losing the seat?
