Dear Editor,
If I harboured any doubts in my mind about Chris Gayle’s lack of class, he certainly put them to rest with his tirade on social media a few days ago in which he invited “haters” to kiss a part of his black anatomy.
I wrote in a letter previously that, in my opinion, Gayle let down a large section of the Jamaican male population. This time around he has let down the entire nation.
Those who wrote to me defending his behaviour and taking me to task are free to do so again.
I, however, stand by my opinion that sporting success and wealth do not give you the leeway to behave in an unseemly manner. On the contrary, one would have hoped that, having risen to the pinnacle of his sport and earned (and deserved) all the money he has made, Gayle could have spared a thought for the influence he can have on the youngsters who are aspiring to do the same.
But I say again, with a nod to the late Rex Nettleford and no apologies: “A buttu in a Benz is still a buttu!”
