Dear Editor,

It is with profound sadness that I learnt of the passing of George Carter, director/producer of Jamaican theatre and theatre arts manager.

Carter will be remembered for his sterling dedication to the development of Jamaican theatre. His name came to be synonymous with any and every large-scale theatre production, where he gave fully of his knowledge in service to national arts development. His commitment knew no bounds as he gave of himself selflessly, particularly when the cause had national implications, such as in the national pantomime and Jamaica’s staging of CARIFESTA in 1976.

He spent most of his life managing and sustaining Jamaica’s foremost theatre movement, the Little Theatre Movement. His years at the administrative helm of the Little Theatre saw it through several transformations, as he oversaw some of its physical renovations. He also supervised the staging of many eminent productions at that theatre, including the national pantomime, other local fares, as well as visiting theatre productions. His was the invisible hand behind the competent running of that theatre for many years, staying there very often from break of day to midnight.

George Carter had a hand in every Jamaican production of substance, sometimes as actor, but mostly in production and technical support. He was also a part of the Ward Theatre Foundation and spent many long, agonising hours searching for solutions to the decaying structure of the Ward.

He was a respected member of the arts community of Jamaica. He involved himself tirelessly, and often without remuneration, as he sought to ensure that the Jamaican theatre landscape was sustained. He gave freely of his knowledge, offering advice readily to others who would stage new productions. His was the vision of Jamaica’s leadership of theatre in the Caribbean and he held nothing back in his determination that this be so.

Today, we pay tribute to an outstanding contributor to the excellence of Jamaican theatre — George Carter, master builder of Jamaican theatre.
