Dear Editor,
The People’s National Party (PNP) has earned for itself the title of “masters of diversion”, as they are now seeking to erect a smokescreen in order to distract the public from keying into the real matters that will enable them to make an informed decision on which is the better of the two major parties.
I can hardly say I’m surprised; it has always been their practice. It was in a similar manner that they launched a fierce onslaught on former prime minister and Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader, Edward Seaga. They created scandals in a bid to malign him in the eyes of the electorate. This was evidenced in how they twisted his “black scandal bag reference” and informed the public that he was “classing” them. They also painted him as sympathising with wrongdoers in Tivoli. They even went as far as to refer to him as being “One Don”.
They tried this same tactic with former Prime Minister Bruce Golding.
Now they simply want to distract the people from their dismal time in governance. How else can they approach the populace? Which issue can they speak on without appearing to be hypocritical, and thereby earning harsh critiques for themselves?
The fact is, the PNP has failed the people of Jamaica, they know that they are bereft of ideas for moving the country forward and so they are like the proverbial drowning man, who, seeking to keep afloat, tries to hold on to straw. My view is that the PNP will do whatever it takes to retain power. They are a desperate lot who have brought nothing to the table on which to seek re-election.
They do not care to advance the stance that their party takes on the issues that are affecting this nation, neither do they care to have meaningful discourse or debate with the Opposition. They only want to shift the focus from all sensible and logical political reasoning to focusing on tainting or discrediting the character of the opponent.
They have not presented a meaningful alternative to the JLP’s 10-point plan, their strategy is to criticise. They have only sought to refer to the plan as being a fluke and have not sought to offer an alternative. In fact, I cannot think of one positively life-altering policy that the PM has put in place.
Andrew Holness has successfully changed the dialogue to one of prosperity; he has shifted the focus from the old ways of practising politics. He is championing the cause for the people, providing them with discourse that does not cause him to appear as if he is insulting their intellect. He has been articulating his aspirations and plans for the country in a manner in which the people can understand. He has been showing us exactly how he and his party will go about changing not only the stagnant political and economic climate in Jamaica, but also how they will proffer the change that the country has been yearning for.
