Dear Editor,
The Jamaica Umbrella Groups of Churches (JUGC) is deeply concerned about the number of incidents during this period of political campaigning, where guns were featured, resulting in the death and injury of some of our Jamaican citizens.
The JUGC appeals to all well-thinking Jamaicans to say ‘no’ to violence. The protection and well-being of every Jamaican is of greatest importance and constitutes our greatest priority.
Our democracy is maturing; we have come a far way from the ugly past and so we cannot afford to allow our democracy to be brought into disrepute.
Whatever the motivation, these incidents have created fear among many of our people. Let us be vigilant as we go to the polls today.
We appeal to the leaders of our major political parties, all candidates and supporters to do all in their power to ensure that we have a peaceful election. Therefore, we urge all concerned to do or say nothing that could incite violence.
The JUGC will be monitoring the election and therefore invites members of the clergy across Jamaica to report any breach of the Political Code of Conduct to our coordinators.
The JUGC calls upon the Christian community to be in prayer over the next 24 hours.
