Dear Editor,
The National Water Commission (NWC) wishes to categorically refute allegations of political “victimisation” made by Pearnel Charles, as published in the Jamaica Observer of Wednesday, February 24, 2016.
Contrary to the claims of victimisation, the NWC has, over the last year, gone to great lengths to facilitate supplying water to the member of parliament’s water truck, for which no payment has yet been received since March 2015. Despite numerous verbal discussions and written communication, the NWC is yet to receive any payment on the monthly bills for water supplied to his truck as per arrangements made at the beginning of 2015.
The NWC must place on record that it has received absolutely no instruction from the Government and has issued no instruction to anyone to not supply water to Charles’ truck on the grounds of politics. It is, nonetheless, expected that he will observe the agreement previously made and honour the payment obligation for the invoices submitted to him over the last year.
It is to be noted that many of the areas referred to by Charles are not areas served by the NWC. Despite many of the people served by Charles’ trucking arrangement not being customers of the NWC, we have facilitated Charles’ attempts to provide trucked water to his constituents for a very long time, and especially during the continued drought of the last several months.
Furthermore, work has already started on the $250-million Soursop Turn to Chapelton Pipeline Replacement project. There are also two other projects scheduled for north-central Clarendon under the NWC’s Tank and Pump programme.
The NWC remains fully committed to continuing to provide the best possible potable water services across Jamaica without regard to partisan politics.
