Dear Editor,
I arrived at the Mona High School at approximately 11:50 am yesterday, Election Day. I observed that the driving entrance was closed; however a pedestrian gate was opened so I had to park on the right-hand side of the road.
I exited my vehicle with my walking cane in my left hand as I recently suffered a fall and was experiencing excruciating pain in my left leg.
A gentleman not wearing any party shirt approached me; however, he was with people wearing green shirts and he asked me for my name. I gave him my driver’s licence and he checked it against the list of electors and directed me to cluster 41. It was a long walk to get there considering that I was aided by a cane.
When I got to cluster 41, the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) representative asked me my name and asked if I was OK and I said yes. I gave her my driver’s licence as I did not have any national voters’ identification card with me. My fingerprints were verified twice and I was the given a ballot along with some instructions which I followed carefully. I then went to the EOJ-provided booth, where I cast my ballot in privacy and handed it back to the EOJ representative who folded the section that needed to be folded and I witnessed her place it in the box.
I would like to make a suggestion to the EOJ and the political parties that, come 2021, or before and the next parochial election that wheelchairs be put in place for the elderly and disabled if they desire to use them, and that provisions be made that where they operate a motor vehicle they be allowed on the school grounds.
The only vehicles allowed on the premises were those marked EOJ Officials, Party Workers and Jamaica Constabulary Force. What about the ‘disabled’.
I also observed that no vending was allowed on the compound; however, a vendor was seen selling refreshments on the median on Mona Road.
I left the school compound at approximately 12:20 pm. Overall, the process quick and very professional. I wonder how bogus voting takes place?
