Portia’s role in the loss and for the future

Dear Editor,

Portia Simpson Miller and the People’s National Party (PNP) should realise that debates are an integral part of the electoral and political process, especially during an election season. The debates are useful in that the diehards are going to vote for their respective party anyway. But the independents, uncommitted and first-time voters could benefit from hearing what both sides have to offer the country.

In the United States presidential election campaign, Republican Marco Rubio repeatedly refers to front-runner Donald Trump as con artist and a scam artist. This didn’t prevent Trump from attending the debates, nor did he ask for an apology. If anything, Simpson Miller should have countered by asking Holness where was his 10-point plan five years ago, while he was in office.

Contrary to what some people in and out of her party might believe, Simpson Miller is not a dunce. She’s a seasoned, experienced, savvy, and intelligent politician. If for any particular reason, she’s not skilled at debates, she should prepare herself by practising mock debates. She needed to defend her Government’s policies, achievements and accomplishments, and at the same time deal with Holness’s house issues.

The PNP lost the elections for a couple of reasons. There should have been no commission of enquiry; a grand waste of time and money. So too was the timing of the hedge against oil. The time to implement that hedge would be now, when oil price is trading at US$30 per barrel. I’m wondering which analyst or economist was Phillips listening to. Besides those, the PNP didn’t run a particularly smart campaign.

But what really bothers me is the vitriol and the disrespect that has been meted out to Simpson Miller by her fellow Jamaican females. You think they would be proud of the country’s first woman prime minister, as I am. I’m of the belief that one doesn’t have to have a PhD to run a country; because if education was the only criteria to govern a country, Jamaica would be one of the best-run countries on Earth. Simpson Miller will continue to contribute in her new role.

I was born and raised in downtown Kingston. I came from Bond Street to Wall Street. I’ve always have an affinity with grass-roots politicians like Simpson Miller, Olivia “Babsy” Grange and Desmond McKenzie.
