Misguided views about the PNP and capitalism

Dear Editor,

I feel compelled to respond to letter writer ‘PP’ who asked in the Daily Observer of May 12, 2016 whether the People’s National Party (PNP) will remain socialist or go capitalist? The letter writer referred to Peter Bunting, former general secretary of the PNP and national security minister, as a capitalist and Dr Peter Phillips as a socialist. Additionally, the writer wrote: “With all that said, will the capitalist gang get control of the PNP or will it go back to the basis on which the party was built and have it remain a socialist party?”

The misguided letter writer seems not to be cognisant of the fact that the most successful, wealthy and progressively advanced countries, like the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, etc, are those that have capitalist governments and economies.

Does Dr Phillips still subscribe to a socialist form of government and ideology? Isn’t it a positive that the indefatigable Peter Bunting understands capitalism and the value of allowing citizens to work extremely hard, be innovative and creative, thus creating wealth for themselves and their families?

Bunting has been one of the country’s most successful investment bankers and politicians, with an impeccable track record in both areas. These successes would make him, without a doubt, the ideal person to be the next PNP president and leader of Her Majesty’s loyal Opposition.

For the letter writer to ask whether the capitalist gang will get control of the PNP is to totally misunderstand the meaning of capitalism. Also, I am not aware of any capitalist or socialist gang operating within the PNP.

The fact of the matter is that Bunting has been well prepared for the job of PNP president and he now has to get the support of the entire leadership corps of the party. If Bunting meticulously outlines his overall plans for the party within a renewal framework, I am confident that he will get overwhelming support from the party’s officers and the majority of delegates across the country.

Also, as a citizen and political observer, I think that former distinguished Justice Minister Mark Golding would make an excellent replacement for Omar Davies in St Andrew Southern. If the PNP wants to effectively renew itself, then Bunting should be installed as PNP president.
