Sugar estates are good agricultural lands. When the acreage under sugar cane is significantly reduced pursuant to management evaluation, as is now happening, cannot even a part of the lands released from sugar cane production be put to use for the market crops of ginger, onion, red peas, and cassava?
In the interest of the Jamaican economy, by way of import substituion, export earnings and jobs, I urge the Government and sugar industry players to examine the feasibility of this suggestion.
