Dear Editor,
The comments made by the Attorney General of Jamaica Marlene Malaloo Forte must not be tolerated by well-thinking Jamaicans.
I believe her outburst incites and instigates hate on a marginalised group in Jamaica.
Homosexuals in Jamaica have been murdered, ridiculed, and rejected by our society. They have been physically and mentally abused without protection. For someone holding such a high office to make such a statement she should recuse herself from this office of public service to all Jamaicans. Is “not in my Cabinet” still the agenda of the Jamaica Labour Party, as was expressed by the former prime minister and party leader Bruce Golding.
Too many horrific acts have been committed against the LGBT community in Jamaica. Our leaders must be held accountable for all Jamaicans. Human rights are just that, human rights, aren’t gay people human beings?
The initiative taken by the United States Embassy to fly the rainbow flag in honour of the lives lost in the senseless killing of 49 human being who are members of the LGBT community should be commended.
The hate philosophy is atrocious and deadly. We need love and unity among our people, not more division built on hate. What we as a nation must be concerned with is not what happens in people’s bedrooms, but how are we going to achieve sustainable development and curb crime.
