Church bigotry at its worst

Dear Editor,

In support of the misguided pronouncements of our attorney general’s opposition to the rainbow flag being flown by the US Embassy, both the Jamaica Coalition for a Healthy Society and the Lawyers’ Christian Fellowship have also issued condemnation. It never amazes me how our churches can get so worked up over anything gay.

Of course, while I do respect the right of the attorney general and these church groups to have their opinions, I find it strange the flying of a flag should get them so hot under the collar, when so much more is happening right here in Jamaica.

Before that, however, I must point out that the question being asked by these church groups as to why no other flag was flown at American embassies when other similar shootings occurred in the past is not well directed or asked with much knowledge. When there was a shooting at a sheik temple in that country, some time ago, the United States did fly a flag at some of its locations around the world showing sympathy for that religious group.

However, even if the flying of this flag was a first for them, that doesn’t seem to make much of a difference for me. After all, the US does have a right to mourn its own citizens – and in the way it sees fit. So why is the church so upset?

Anyway, I am more concerned with the church’s continued lack of interest in anything that is not gay. We all see what has happened in Old Harbour recently. Four people were reportedly killed by agents of the State and up to now the church has said nothing! Now how is it that the church is so upset about a flag but so indifferent on other things.

Is it that the Jamaican church, and apparently the Government’s most senior attorney, see the flying of a gay flag as worse than the continued killing of innocent people?

I am no Christian, but based on what I know about who Jesus was supposed to have been, I have no doubt that if He were alive today He would be totally ashamed of these church groups and their continued bigotry.

And to think they call themselves Christians!
