Malahoo Forte’s tweet and Orlando atrocity separate issues

Dear Editor,

No support can be given to the targeting of individuals based on religion, sexual orientation or politics.

Marlene Malahoo Forte’s tweet is a separate matter from the atrocities which occurred in Orlando and must be treated as such.

The attorney general was quick to voice her sympathies relating to the tragedy. She further went on to voice her displeasure at the raising of a flag which has come to symbolise gay rights. The attorney general should not be targeted or her tweet deliberately misrepresented.

Why do we, as Jamaicans, so readily throw each other under the bus?

The US Embassy is not without blame in this flag matter.

There are some who seem to think that they can gain mileage from the attorney generals tweet and the resulting spat with the US Embassy. This attempt is misguided as the Jamaican public understands that our prime minister, Opposition leader and attorney general have all offered their sympathies to the USA. Therefore, any calls or back room pressure for the attorney general’s resignation is unnecessary and will not be supported by Jamaicans who understand the nuances of these separate issues.
