In defence of Donald Trump

Dear Editor,

Is it too much to ask that an effort be made to accurately reflect the comments of leaders, whoever they may be? If not out of respect for the truth, respect for the people reading your newspaper and your obligation to convey truth.

I would like to point out what I believe are a number of inaccuracies in the Jamaica Observer editorial of July 28, 2016.

First, the editorial indicated that Donald Trump described Mexicans as criminals and rapists. This is not the whole truth. I have heard Trump say several times that murderers and drug dealers and criminals are crossing the Mexican border and are to be deported. I have also heard him say that Mexicans who illegally enter the United States must return and enter legally. Regardless of a previous statement, these are his final positions and have been repeated numerous times by him and those around him.

Second, the editorial said Donald Trump has called for a ban on Muslims. Again, a half-truth. He has repeatedly said the ban is to be placed on Muslims coming from countries exporting Muslim terrorists and countries openly espousing these activities.

It is not a mystery why Donald Trump is toe to toe with Hillary Clinton. The reason is very simple; he is speaking to views that are held by a wide cross section of the American population, both Democrat and Republican.
