Why are environmentalists so fired up?

Dear Editor,

If some of us didn’t know better we would believe that these environmentalists in Jamaica are just here to be seen, to create a ruckus, and to cause undue confusion. These conclusions could be easily drawn based on the number of things playing out in the media, the range of issues they choose to jump onto and then spring off as they like, while mass breaches are taking place every day across the island.

So the real question is, why have they abandoned their calling in those areas? Are they too low-profile or too highly guarded for their righteous tentacles to reach? I may not be too far off in that observation after all, because only a very misguided set of individuals would try consistently to block the imminent progress or prosperity that awaits Jamaica, St Elizabeth, Nain and specifically its residents when the now closed Alpart plant reopens for manufacturing driven by coal. Please allow the project to pick up some steam.

Again, I ask what is really the problem with the environmentalists? Have they checked with the United States and many other leading economies in the world to see that their manufacturing, electricity and developmental drives are partially or in some cases fully fired up by coal? Can’t we as a nation speak, for once, in unison when it comes to development, manufacturing, and eventually nation-building?

Adding insult to the injury of confusion some people are now faced with is the fact that in this entire tantrum being thrown by the environmentalists, there’s no clarity for those people who are of the view that trees are going to be cut down and burnt to acquire this coal that will be used; not knowing that the coal referred to is a mineral taken from the Earth.

My view is that environmentalists are to develop and give the solutions to problems which may arise. They must not demonstrate a populist agenda awash with propaganda, but fumigate the atmosphere of toxic energy when positive currents are being welcomed and built for the advancement of the country. Try to do or say something for once that contributes to growth and not stymie it.

We cannot continue to complain about all development for the country then simultaneously wonder why we can’t grow as a country. What makes it worse is when we compare ourselves as a country to other countries using the same means to get ahead that we are hindering and dismissing as unworkable.
