The power of a green cap

Dear Editor,

Hurricane Matthew clearly had Jamaicans in a panic, reasonably so. However, preparation was the key, and for this reason the Government got a remarkable approval rating in the handling of this catastrophic event.

Signs of good governance may easily manifest through a growing economy, social stability and crime reduction. Surpassing these areas would be the inability of a political Opposition party to find any major disapproval or signs of mishandling by the Government.

This hypothesis was proven over the weekend by former Information Minister Sandra Falconer, who was verbally battered and blown away on social media for politicking over the prime minister’s choice of dress while he was up and about over the island ensuring preparations were in place for the impending hurricane.

For some reason, Falconer believes a green cap with the word ‘Jamaica’ printed on it was inappropriate for the prime minister to be wearing at the time, and boldly expressed her thoughts through a tweet. While I cannot fathom the logic behind her disapproval, it would seem to me, based on the social media comments and reactions, that citizens were more interested in the prime minister carrying out his duties more so than what he was wearing. This has given birth to a new superstition, that is, wearing a green cap with the word ‘Jamaica’ at the threat of a hurricane will divert it into a different direction.
