Dear Editor,
Many students have been left in mourning after three schoolteachers died recently — Christopher Gayle, Kingston College; Nadine Trail, Norman Manley High; and Shenoria Hemmings Lee, Central High.
These are definitely stress-filled times in the classroom.
The National Standards Curriculum has placed a lot of stress on teachers, many of whom are unsure of the intricacies in the new innovations being pursued. Additional stress comes when teachers are told that they will be penalised if they are unable to grasp the new curriculum and replaced by those who have a working knowledge of the new development. This is compounded by the varied challenges that present themselves with students from differing backgrounds. Many man-hours are wasted dealing with poor behaviour and indiscipline.
The Jamaica Teachers’ Association in collaboration with the Ministry of Education must put measures in place to correct this madness.
