Clean Jamaica until she shines!

Dear Editor,

This is an open letter to minister of state in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for works, Everald Warmington:

You, Sir, have proposed the launch of a national clean-up campaign. Sir, the best thing you can do before you even start is to figure out a way to keep the dirt from coming back. That has been the bane of all previous campaigns, and punitive anti-litter laws are dead letters.

You can deal with the blight of plastic bottles by having your Government place a dollar surcharge on all things sold in plastic bottles. This charge should be redeemable when the empties are returned to recycling centres.

There should be something similar, but less than a dollar, for styrofoam. This would create a hustling for poor people at Christmas.

In terms of manpower for your clean-up, bring out the schools, bring out the army, and bring out the prisoners, bring out the churches, bring out celebrities, and clean Jamaica until she shines. That is your slogan Good luck!
