Dear Editor,
“When good people in any country cease their vigilance and struggle, then evil men prevail.” — Pearl S Buck
On a daily basis we as a people are faced with a truth that cannot be hidden or ignored. That truth is that our countrymen no longer look out for the other. Selfish ways and desires have crept into our hearts and crippled the sense of love that we should all feel and embrace as human beings created with natural desire to love and communicate. This is evident in the way we treat our children, the elderly, and even ourselves.
Our crime rate is out of control, our children are violent to each other, and our adult population seems unable to show restraint and effectively communicate without violence. The moral fabric of this society is fading away slowly. Death, scamming, rape, robbery, etc, are evidence of our continued failure as a people.
There are aspects of our society that needs inspection, and the truth is that no plan of government or the security forces can deter or stop the mayhem plaguing this island. Our family structure has collapsed and is in need of rebuilding. When God in all wisdom created the family, he gave a command found in Proverbs 22:6: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it.” Now, how many parents spend adequate time with the children reinforcing good values and morals?
Today, often the scenario is that parents, instead of correcting their children when they do wrong, they ignore it; and when these children turn out to have problems with the law of the land, these said parents wonder what went wrong. How can you, as a mother or father, tell your child to hurt another if they do something wrong to your child? How can you go before a teacher and slap that teacher in front of children? You are teaching the future generation to be unlawful, disrespectful, and training the future generation to hurt each other instead of resolving conflicts and differences.
Our nation is filled with individuals who have not learnt how to resolve conflict, how to obey authority, and have not even the simplest idea how to be able to express themselves effectively. The parents have failed because they themselves have not inherited the positive cultures of our forefathers when it comes to raising children. It truly takes a village to raise a child.
We need to go back to God’s guideline for the family. The family consists of a father, who is the role model for children, especially a son. The father must teach his children to obey the law, respect others and himself, and also to be patient and be content. A mother should reaffirm the father’s stance on these matters, and both should grow that child in love.
